Grade Calculator

Weighted average of your assignments, or the final exam score you need

Your weighted grade

Total weight

0%

Compute your course grade two ways: average weighted assignments (homework, quizzes, midterms) or find out exactly what you need on the final exam to hit your target grade. Everything runs in your browser — no sign-up, nothing uploaded. It is built for students planning their semester and teachers double-checking gradebooks.

How to Use

  • Pick a mode: Choose 「Weighted grade」 or 「Final exam needed」 at the top.
  • Weighted grade: Add a row per assignment, enter the score (%) and its weight (%), and read your weighted average instantly.
  • Check the weights: If the weights do not add up to 100%, a warning reminds you that a category may be missing.
  • Final exam needed: Enter your current grade, the final exam weight, and your target grade to see the score you need.

Features

  • Two modes in one tool: weighted average and final-exam requirement
  • Live results — every keystroke recalculates, no submit button
  • Warning when assignment weights do not total 100%
  • Friendly messages for edge cases: target already secured, or mathematically impossible
  • Supports extra credit (scores above 100%) and fractional weights
  • Works entirely in your browser — your grades never leave the device

Weighted Grade vs Final Exam Mode

The weighted mode answers 「where do I stand right now?」: it combines everything graded so far into one percentage, normalizing by the weights you entered. The final exam mode answers the forward-looking question 「what do I need on the final?」 by solving the grading formula for the one unknown score. Together they cover the two questions students ask most at the end of a term: the current standing, and the cost of every possible outcome on the last exam.

Use Cases

  • Semester planning: See how much each upcoming assignment can move your grade.
  • Finals week: Find the minimum final exam score that still gets you an A.
  • Syllabus checks: Verify that your assignment weights really add up to 100%.
  • Goal setting: Test different target grades to see which ones are still reachable.

Tips for Accurate Results

Use the weights from your syllabus, not guesses — a homework category worth 10% behaves very differently from one worth 30%. If your course drops the lowest quiz, exclude that score yourself before entering the rows. In final exam mode, remember that the 「current grade」 should be your grade in everything except the final. When the required score comes back above 100%, try lowering the target a few points to find a goal that is still on the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the weighted grade calculated?

Each assignment score is multiplied by its weight, the products are summed, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights. If your weights add up to 100%, the result is simply the sum of score × weight for each row. The tool warns you when the weights do not add up to 100%.

What if my weights do not add up to 100%?

The calculator still works: it normalizes by dividing by the actual total weight. An amber warning appears so you can check whether you forgot an assignment, since a total below 100% usually means a category is missing.

How does the final exam mode work?

Enter your current grade, how much the final exam counts toward the course (in percent), and the grade you want overall. The required score is (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final exam weight as a fraction.

What does it mean when the required score is above 100%?

It means the target is mathematically out of reach even with a perfect final exam. The tool shows the exact score you would need and flags the goal as impossible, so you can pick a more realistic target instead.

Can a score above 100% be entered for extra credit?

Yes. The weighted mode accepts scores above 100%, so bonus points and extra credit assignments are handled correctly.
