VAT Rate: --

Add or remove VAT (Value Added Tax) from any price with presets for the UK, Germany, France, and common EU rates — or any custom rate. Enter a net price to get the VAT amount and gross total, or enter a gross price to work backwards to the net. The breakdown stays consistent to the cent, exactly the way invoices need it. Built for freelancers, small businesses, accountants, and anyone pricing goods in a VAT country.

How to Use

  • Choose a mode: Add VAT (net → gross) or Remove VAT (gross → net).
  • Enter the amount: Type the net or gross price depending on the mode.
  • Pick a rate: UK 20%, DE 19%, FR 20%, EU 21/22/25%, or a custom rate.
  • Read the breakdown: Net, VAT amount, and gross update instantly as you type.

Features

  • Both directions: add VAT to a net price or strip VAT from a gross price
  • One-click presets for the most common European VAT rates
  • Custom rate field supports any percentage including reduced rates
  • Consistent rounding — net + VAT always equals gross
  • Live breakdown line shows the full calculation
  • Works entirely in your browser — no data is uploaded

Adding vs Removing VAT

The two operations are not symmetric in how people get them wrong. Adding VAT is a simple multiplication: at 20%, a net of 100 becomes a gross of 120. Removing VAT is where the common mistake happens — VAT is 20% of the net, not of the gross, so you cannot just subtract 20% from 120 (that would give 96). The correct move is to divide by 1.2: 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100. This calculator handles both directions properly and shows the VAT portion explicitly, so you can see exactly how much of a gross price is tax.

Use Cases

  • Invoicing: Quote gross prices to EU customers from your net price list.
  • Expense claims: Extract the reclaimable VAT from gross receipts.
  • Cross-border sales: Check how the same product prices out under UK, German, and French VAT.
  • Bookkeeping: Reconcile net and gross figures when records only show one.

Tips for Accurate VAT Figures

Always confirm which rate applies — many countries have a standard rate plus reduced rates for food, books, or services, so use the custom rate field when the preset does not match your case. When you remove VAT, remember the result is only as good as the rate assumption: a receipt at 20% and the same receipt at 19% yield different nets. For invoices, round per line item the way this calculator does, then sum — summing first and rounding last can drift by a cent.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Enter the net price (the amount before tax), pick a VAT rate preset — UK 20%, Germany 19%, France 20%, or common EU rates 21/22/25% — or choose a custom rate. The calculator shows the VAT amount and the gross price (net + VAT) instantly.

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

Switch to Remove VAT mode and enter the gross price (the amount including tax). The calculator divides by 1 plus the rate — for example, 120 at 20% VAT gives a net of 100 and a VAT portion of 20.

What is the difference between net and gross?

Net is the price before VAT is added; gross is the final price including VAT. Adding VAT multiplies the net by (1 + rate), while removing VAT divides the gross by (1 + rate).

Can I use a VAT rate that is not in the presets?

Yes. Select the custom rate option and type any percentage from 0 to 100 — reduced rates like 5%, 7%, or 10%, or any rate used in your country.

How are amounts rounded?

All results are rounded to 2 decimal places, and the breakdown is kept consistent: net + VAT always equals gross after rounding, so the figures match what you would put on an invoice.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. All calculations run entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded or stored anywhere.
