How QR Codes Work

The QR code was invented in 1994 by Masahiro Hara’s team at Denso Wave, a Toyota subsidiary, to track car parts faster than barcodes. It stores data in a two-dimensional grid of black and white “modules”, so thousands of characters fit into a square. The three large corner squares are finder patterns, letting scanners lock on at any angle.

The clever part is error correction, based on Reed–Solomon codes. Every QR code carries redundant data, so it still decodes when dirty, torn, or partly covered. Level H tolerates about 30% damage, which is why brands can stamp a logo in the middle and the code keeps working.
