Why a Phonetic Alphabet Exists
In voice communication, many letters sound almost identical — B and P, M and N, F and S — especially over radio static or a bad phone connection. Spelling alphabets solve this by replacing each letter with a word chosen to be unmistakable in any accent. The current version was finalized by the International Civil Aviation Organization in the 1950s after testing words with English, French, and Spanish speakers, and was later adopted by NATO.
That is why the spellings look odd: “Alfa” uses an F so non-English speakers do not say “Alpa,” and “Juliett” has a double T so French speakers pronounce the final letter. The digits have prescribed pronunciations too — Three becomes “TREE,” Nine becomes “NIN-er” — because those are the sounds that survive a noisy channel best.
