How the Generator Builds Text

This tool does not reproduce a continuous classical passage. It assembles text from a fixed list of 35 Latin-looking words (lorem, ipsum, dolor, sit, amet, consectetur, and so on), drawing each word independently with Math.random(). The unit you select changes only how those words are grouped.

  • Words: exactly N words joined by single spaces.
  • Sentences: 8 to 20 words, calculated as 8 + Math.floor(Math.random() * 13), followed by a period.
  • Paragraphs: 3 to 7 sentences, calculated as 3 + Math.floor(Math.random() * 5), joined by spaces, with a blank line inserted between paragraphs.

One behavior matters for how the result reads: every sentence is forced to begin with “Lorem ipsum”. The generator sets the first word to Lorem and the second to ipsum each time it builds a sentence, so a five-sentence block starts with that same pair five times. Because the word list has only 35 entries and selection happens with replacement, repeated words are also common — a sentence can contain “et” three times.

The page renders 3 paragraphs on first load. Choosing a unit or dragging the slider regenerates the text immediately; the Generate button simply re-rolls the current settings.

Worked Examples

Defaults: 3 paragraphs. Each paragraph averages about 70 words (5 sentences × 14 words), so the output lands near 210 words. The hard range for one paragraph is 24 words (three 8-word sentences) to 140 words (seven 20-word sentences), meaning three paragraphs span roughly 72 to 420 words.

5 sentences. Each sentence is independently 8–20 words, so the block holds 40–100 words and averages about 70. Expect five separate periods and five occurrences of “Lorem ipsum”.

50 words. You receive exactly 50 tokens. The first two are fixed to “Lorem” and “ipsum”; the remaining 48 are random draws. With only 35 distinct words available, duplicates are guaranteed by the pigeonhole principle.

50 paragraphs. This is the maximum setting and can produce up to 7,000 words, which is enough to overflow a typical page layout and test scroll behavior under heavy content.

Choosing Between Paragraphs, Sentences, and Words

ModeUse it forLimitation
WordsButton labels, table cells, short form placeholdersMaximum 50 words
SentencesHeadlines, card summaries, notification copyNo internal punctuation
ParagraphsArticle bodies, blog post filler, full-page mockupsHighly variable output length

The variability of paragraphs mode is easy to underestimate. Two runs at the same setting can differ by hundreds of words, so if you need a predictable amount of filler, generate more than you need and trim with a word counter.

Common Mistakes

  • Expecting the traditional Lorem Ipsum passage. The tool produces random words from a small vocabulary, not the “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit” text used in print specimens. Real Cicero-derived text has commas and varied openings; this output does not.
  • Assuming a fixed word count. Paragraphs and sentences are random-length, so the count changes on every generation.
  • Clicking Generate after every change. Selecting a unit or moving the slider already regenerates the output.
  • Using words mode for long filler. It stops at 50 words; switch to sentences or paragraphs for anything longer.
  • Treating it as realistic copy. The lack of commas and the repeated sentence openings make it obvious the text is synthetic, which is fine for layout but poor for readability testing.

Accuracy and Limits

There is no seed, so output is not reproducible — you cannot regenerate a specific sample you liked, and refreshing always changes the text. The generator never localizes its vocabulary, so the Latin is identical regardless of the site language. Copying to the clipboard relies on the browser Clipboard API, which requires a secure (HTTPS) context and may prompt for permission; if it fails, select the text field contents manually. The Download button always writes the same filename, lorem-ipsum.txt, so multiple downloads overwrite each other in your browser’s download folder unless you rename them.

Generation happens entirely in your browser with no network request, so nothing you type or generate leaves the page.

Practical Tips

For a full viewport of article filler, start at 8 to 12 paragraphs and check the measured height. For form inputs and navigation labels, 3 to 6 words is usually enough; longer strings distort the layout you are trying to inspect. When testing line-height and font pairing, sentence mode is more useful than paragraph mode because the lengths are more uniform. Keep a word counter open beside the generator if a spec calls for a precise word budget.

Real-World Scenarios

  • CMS seeding: A 10-paragraph batch averages about 700 words, enough to populate several article records and exercise pagination. Output length varies between runs, so insert one record per generation instead of slicing a single saved block.
  • Email template QA: Use sentence mode for a subject line and 3 words for the preheader, then check where each truncates at common client widths.
  • Long-form scroll testing: 50 paragraphs can exceed 7,000 words, which is useful for stress-testing sticky headers, scroll-to-top controls, and footer reveal timing under extreme content.
  • Localization preview: Translated copy usually runs longer than English. Since this tool never expands or contracts to match a language, swap in the real target string before capturing screenshots rather than relying on the Latin filler.
  • Form validation: Words mode produces a predictable token count, so a 50-word paste reliably triggers maxlength, overflow, and character-counter states.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does every sentence start with 'Lorem ipsum'?

The generator forces the first two words of every sentence to 'Lorem' and 'ipsum', so a five-sentence block begins with that pair five times. It is a deliberate anchor, not a continuous passage from Cicero.

Can I generate the exact same placeholder text twice?

No. Words are drawn with Math.random() and there is no seed value, so every click produces a different result. Reload or re-roll to get new text.

How many real words are in one paragraph?

A paragraph contains 3 to 7 sentences, and each sentence contains 8 to 20 words, so a single paragraph ranges from 24 to 140 words and averages roughly 70.

Why is words mode capped at 50 words?

The quantity slider is hard-limited to a range of 1 to 50, so the maximum is 50 in words mode, 50 sentences, or 50 paragraphs. Longer filler needs several generations pasted together.

Does the generated text include commas or other punctuation?

Only a period at the end of each sentence. There are no commas, colons, question marks, or capital letters beyond the forced 'Lorem'. The output looks like a word list rather than natural prose.

What file does the Download button save?

A plain UTF-8 text file named lorem-ipsum.txt containing exactly what is shown in the output box, including the blank lines between paragraphs.
