The core idea: ratios to a base unit
Almost every unit in a category is defined by its relationship to a single base unit. For length, the base is the meter. For weight, it’s the kilogram. Volume uses the liter, and so on.
This means nearly all conversions are a simple ratio. To convert from one unit to another, you multiply by the source factor and divide by the target factor. One mile is exactly 1609.344 meters, so miles to kilometers is just multiplying by 1.609344. One pound is 0.45359237 kilograms.
Because conversion is just multiplication, a converter that knows each unit’s relationship to the base can convert anything in that category in a single step.
Why temperature is different
Temperature is the exception to the ratio rule. The Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin scales do not share a zero point, so they cannot be converted with a single multiplier.
- To go from Celsius to Fahrenheit you need the offset formula: F = C × 9/5 + 32.
- Kelvin starts at absolute zero (−273.15 °C), so it’s an offset on top of the others, not a scale.
